The Vehicles That Tamed Africa

“On Death Row: Images of Abandoned Land Rovers

In kind memory to the vehicles that tamed Africa.
Land Rovers, Land Cruisers and Jeeps ! Long live the memory.”

The nice folks at The South African Overland Forum have an amazing collection of photos of abandoned Land Rovers, Land Cruisers, Jeeps and other tough vehicles that served their time braving the rough roads and unforgiving terrains of Africa.

The interesting thing is that many of these really old vehicles are still in service across the continent today. I saw (and actually used) some of these vehicles during my year-long voluntary service in Uganda. And here in Ghana you’ll find them being used as tow trucks in the cities, or as multi-purpose vehicles — carrying people, animals, goods, etc — in the rural communities (especially in the northern regions).
